This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week.
The remuneration range for this role is $80,369 to $113,462 (including KiwiSaver) depending on skills and experience.
This is a fixed term position until August 2027.
The opportunity
In this role you will play a critical part in ensuring the accurate accounting and reporting of Wellington Water’s business activities. The Financial Accountant is the go-to person for all queries relating to statutory obligations, PBE accounting standards, and audit and taxation requirements.
You will:
Prepare statutory financial statements and contribute to annual and half-year reports
Deliver accurate month-end close processes including journals, accruals, reconciliations and fixed assets
Maintain balance sheet integrity and support high-quality internal and external reporting
Support audit and taxation requirements including GST, FBT and income tax filings
Provide financial insights and technical accounting advice to finance partners and the wider business
About you
You are a confident and capable financial accountant who is comfortable operating at pace. You can quickly get across new environments and take ownership of core financial accounting responsibilities.
As the key point of contact for financial accounting, you bring strong technical judgement, attention to detail and the confidence to work directly with auditors, advisors and internal stakeholders. With Wellington Water transitioning to Tiaki Wai, you will thrive in a busy, change‑heavy environment and be ready to contribute immediately to transition activity and upcoming audits.
To be successful in this role you will bring:
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Chartered Accountant (or equivalent) qualification or currently working towards it
Strong experience in financial accounting, reporting and month-end close
Advanced Excel skills and experience with large financial systems
A proactive, detail-focused approach with the ability to work collaboratively
The successful candidate will need to complete a credit check.

Wellington Water Ltd is the professional water services provider across Greater Wellington and South Wairarapa. Our job is to provide safe and healthy drinking water, collect and treat wastewater, and ensure the stormwater network is well managed. We’re a multi-council owned entity, tasked to manage the infrastructure and deliver water services to our communities. From 1 July 2026, a new chapter in water services begins. Tiaki Wai will take over responsibility for providing Three Waters Services to approximately 433,000 residents across the Wellington metro regions.
