Who are we:

We manage the drinking water, wastewater and storm water services from source to sea for our councils – Hutt, Porirua, Upper Hutt and Wellington city councils, South Wairarapa District Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council. We partner with the community and engineering consultants and contractors on projects, water conservation, operations work and asset planning.

The Senior Communications Advisor – Media is part of our small Communications and Community Engagement Team. We’re dedicated to making it easy for the community to understand what is happening with their water services and infrastructure and the role we all play in improving the quality of our water and the amount of water we have as region

As the Senior Communications Advisor – Media you will love pitching stories, be a formidable relationship builder and a calm, customer focused voice during incident and issues management. You will have a knack for spotting opportunities and risks and building credibility internally and externally with a collaborative, transparent and upfront approach to sharing and telling Wellington Water stories. You will be part of the Incident and Emergency Management Teams, which includes on an on-call roster. You will also be involved in developing and delivering communications strategies and plans.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or demonstrated experience in media, journalism or communications
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience providing strategic communications and engagement planning and delivery including in a media related role
  • Good understanding of how the media works, media trends and the media landscape (including preferably experience working as a journalist)
  • A nose for news, with proven experience successfully pitching stories and ability to manage issues in a trusted and transparent manner
  • Incident and Emergency Management experience – ideally including in a PIM role
  • Knowledge of working with government or local government
  • Experience building great working relationships with senior managers, staff and external stakeholders
  • Good writing and editing skills
  • Other specialist communication and engagement skills, i.e. event management, marketing communications, stakeholder engagement, change communications.

In addition to the above, you will be self-starter, great at collaborating and pitching in to help your immediate colleagues and others across Wellington Water.
